It was difficult to decide where to stay in Coban because the area is so rural and there were not many accommodation options for 4 guests just for 2 nights. Coban was the first place I went to immediately after landing in Guatemala City. We hired a private taxi and just used him throughout our entire stay in Guatemala. For a full detailed Guatemala itinerary with many activities and towns visited, read my article here.

Staying in Coban City Center

The typical and most common area to stay in Coban is the city center itself. Coban is a very small city, but it still serves as the hub for transport and main activities for the surrounding Alta Verapaz region. The center is where you’ll find the bus terminals, most of the restaurants, markets, and local tour operators. For travelers who want a straightforward base with easy access to transport and services, this is the most convenient choice on where to stay in Coban.

The places to stay in the city range from cheap hostels to mid range hotels. But, Guatemala is one of the cheapest destinations for travel in the world. So, nowhere should be a problem in Coban. The accommodations tend to be very simple but practical and it gets the job done. Staying here makes it easy to arrange transport to and from Semuc Champey, coffee farm tours and caves.
The city center is typically safe during the day. But, if you’re in Guatemala I recommend practice very safe behavior and avoid walking late at night. Staying in the center also means you will be close to local restaurants and cafes, where you can try traditional Q’eqchi’ dishes or Guatemalan staples such as pepián and kak’ik, the famous local turkey soup.
The city center has lots of cheap hostels that cater to backpackers traveling to Semuc Champey. These hostels usually provide shuttle services to Lanquín and help organize guided day trips. Just speak with anyone at reception about Semuc Champey. The convenience of being in town allows you to get an early start when joining tours or traveling further into Alta Verapaz. While the city itself is not a major tourist attraction, its centrality makes it one of the best places to stay in Cobán Guatemala if your priority is logistics and having access to everything.

Staying near the outskirts of Coban

I really like to stay in Quiet off the beaten path places when in countries like Guatemala or Costa Rica. I think being in and around nature and having more quiet is more immersive than staying in a city. Also, it’s always cheaper staying outside the towns. The outskirts of Cobán offer a calmer atmosphere than the center, while still being close enough to return easily for meals, shopping, or transport connections.
Hotels and eco-lodges outside Cobán focus more on nature and comfort. Many of them have expansive grounds with orchids, tropical birds, and shaded walking paths. This makes them a good option for travelers who want to relax in a natural setting after visiting Semuc Champey or exploring the caves in the region. I think these are the best areas to stay in Coban Guatemala.
Staying outside the city also feels safer for some visitors, as these properties are usually more controlled environments, with private entrances and on-site dining. Where I stayed in Coban was a hotel called Posada Montana del Quetzal. An eco lodge in the cold mountains of Coban and it gave the exact feeling I wanted.
From the outskirts, reaching Semuc Champey involves the same route as from the city center. Most tour operators will pick you up directly at your accommodation, and the drive to Lanquín takes around two hours. From there you have to take local transport that descends the steep mountain roads into Semuc Champey.
The journey to Semuc Champey is going to be long no matter where you stay in Cobán, booking from the outskirts is just as accessible as from the center. If you are wondering where to stay in Cobán Guatemala to balance comfort with convenience, this is a great option for you.

Best Hostels in Coban, Guatemala
There isn’t a very large pool of accommodations to choose from like Lake Atitlan or Antigua, but what it does have are really affordable and never crowded hostels. Hostels in Cobán usually provide dorms and private rooms, shared kitchens, and common spaces that you share with other people. The main advantage of staying in a hostel here is the ability to organize tours easily and cost. Many hostels either run their own shuttles or work closely with local tour operators, which makes it easy to arrange a trip to Semuc Champey without hassle.
You should note that hostels often attract a younger crowd and it can get loud and lively at times. I, personally would never stay in a hostel if my main goal is to immerse myself in nature and be in peace and quiet, because you’re going to get the opposite. Also, everyone sees and is around everyone. If you rather be private then hostels aren’t for you either.
A lot of people have trouble with accepting safety when staying in hostels. You know, you don’t have your own private room to keep your belongings. The main drawback is that they are basic, and uncomfortable for most people. If you are looking for where to stay in Cobán Guatemala and prioritize budget and social atmosphere over luxury, then hostels in the city are the best fit.

Best Hotels in Coban, Guatemala
Hotels in Cobán offer a different experience, leaning toward comfort, tranquility, and service. Many hotels in the city and its outskirts are family-run. This makes them have better service and a genuine care for what the customer thinks. Rooms often come with private bathrooms, hot showers, and sometimes in-house restaurants serving both Guatemalan and international food. My cabin at my hotel had everything including a chimney and fireplace.
Hotels closer to the center provide convenience for accessing the market, the central park, and local shops. Those on the edge of town or in more secluded areas have jungle, mountains and gardens, which makes them really nice for adventure travelers and people who live in the city and want to be immersed in nature. Some of these hotels also focus on eco-tourism, offering guided walks in nearby forests or birdwatching opportunities.
From hotels, reaching Semuc Champey is straightforward because almost all of them can help arrange transport. While the trip is long, staying in a hotel with more comfort makes the early departure and late return more bearable. This option is often the best for couples, small groups, or travelers who want privacy while still being close to the main attractions. For many visitors, the balance of comfort and accessibility makes hotels one of the best places to stay in Cobán Guatemala.

Staying in Lanquin vs. Coban

A question a lot of travelers ask is whether to stay in Coban or Lanquin when visiting Semuc Champey. Lanquin is a lot closer to Semuc Champey and is a very small village. If you stay in Lanquin you will have more time and basically save 4 hours in transport since you will avoid the long 2 hour drive from the city and back. But, Lanquin is very remote and doesn’t have great accommodation options or facilities.
If you decide to stay in Lanquin, read my article on everything to know about Lanquin Guatemala.
If you stay in Coban, it is larger, safer and better connected to modern comforts. There are banks, restaurants and other services that Lanquin lacks. If you are looking for where to stay in Cobán Guatemala with good infrastructure while still being able to visit Semuc Champey, Cobán is the more reliable choice. Lanquin is better if you want to save time and Coban is better for everything else.
Safety in Coban, Guatemala
Thinking of where to stay in Coban comes with thinking about safety there as well. I don’t think that Guatemala is an ultra safe country or anything. When I was walking through Guatemala City I did feel a sense of uneasiness, especially when stopping at places to buy street and stuff. It was very hectic in Guatemala City for sure. But in other well known touristy areas and rural areas like Lake Atitlan and Coban, we had no worries.
When traveling to Semuc Champey from Cobán, the main risk is not crime but the condition of the road. The drive is long and bumpy, with steep sections leading into Lanquín. Tour operators and shuttles are accustomed to this journey, so you should be good.
