Is Lake Atitlán worth visiting? My answer is yes
I wouldn’t write so many articles and spend days here if it wasn’t. In short, yes. It is worth visiting Lake Atitlán when you’re in Guatemala.
Lake Atitlan Guatemala is a very unique and beautiful place. Especially if you stay at a hotel right on the lake and look up at the mountains like I did. There are many different towns in Lake Atitlán. Each offering a unique experience. If you want to know where to stay in Lake Atitlán Guatemala, read my article where I talk about the different towns and the best hotels in each one.
Some of the coolest villages are Panajachel, San Pedro, San Juan, San Marcos and Santiago de Atitlán. Some of these villages are best for backpacking and budget tourists. Other villages are great for wellness retreats and a quieter vibe. There are towns here that really have a great nightlife scene where you can easily meet new people and have a great time.
Because each of these little towns offer something different for every type of traveler, you can pick and choose the type of experiences and stay you want to have. You can have a quiet and laid-back vibe. You can get up at 5 am and go on hikes up volcanoes and through the jungle. Or, you can walk the busy streets of Panajachel and Santiago eating street food, looking at local art and immersing yourself in culture.
One of the best things about Lake Atitlán is how affordable everything is. Visiting Guatemala in general is very cheap compared to most places. Accommodation, food and activities won’t break the bank. I found it was extremely easy to decide to add Lake Atitlán to our Guatemala itinerary because it still kept us within our budget.
One thing that will make this trip even cheaper, is the time you visit. To me, the best time to visit Lake Atitlán is in the off season, when crowds are at their lowest and fight and accommodation prices are low.
Compared to places like Guatemala City or Antigua, Lake Atitlán has much more variety and things to offer in short distance that you can easily check out with one ferry ride if you wanted to.
What it’s like visiting Lake Atitlán Guatemala

Lake Atitlán is also a very large place. There are about 7 main towns that tourists visit and some others that mostly have locals. Because of how large it is and because there are so many different towns to visit and see, you can never really get bored. In fact, you might find that you need more time to see and experience everything. Any place that makes me feel like that is a place worth visiting to me.
If you are someone who likes one centralized location to hunker down and stay put, then Lake Atitlán is not for you. There is not much to do if you stay in your hotel or within your little community. Walk around and get immersed in the local culture and see for yourself how everything runs. You won’t be alone, there are thousands of other tourists all doing the same things.
There are many lively streets lined with street vendors and restaurants running all along the towns of Lake Atitlán. In Panajachel where I stayed, some of the streets were really busy even late at night. All the restaurants are open till late and the food is cheap as well.
In terms of accommodation, there are hotels, boutique hotels, eco lodges, busy hostels, luxury hotels and Airbnbs. Where you stay will depend on the type of vibe you want to have each day.
You don’t need to rent a car at all. In fact I’m really against driving in Guatemala. I think it’s hectic and confusing. But, Lake Atitlán is a really walkable place so you don’t need to worry about that. If you need to get to a far destination within the lake you can just hire a tuk tuk for pennies. For moving between the villages, you can take a ferry to and from.
The easiest place to get transport is Panajachel. It’s the main hub in Lake Atitlán. If you want to leave the lake completely and go back to Guatemala City or to Antigua you can get a shuttle from Panajachel easily.
There are not many highly active places like night clubs or large parties happening in the streets here in Lake Atitlán. There is some nightlife in San Pedro, but it’s not that intense actually. There are small bars, restaurants on the lake and some drinking and partying going on at some of the hostels.
What I loved about Lake Atitlán Guatemala

The Views

Our hotel had some of the best views I could ask for. We were situated right on the lake. On a clear day we could easily see all the volcanoes and the light bouncing off the lake for miles. It’s a great view for sitting with a coffee.
Exploration and Walkability
One of the things I did the most was simply walk around exploring Lake Atitlán. Not even setting a specific location in maps. But, just walking the streets and observing interesting things. Sometimes something cool will catch your eye and you can check it out. I discovered so many interesting places to eat and to shop by just exploring on foot. It reminded me a lot of towns in Europe with how walkable Lake Atitlán is.
Every town feels different
The uniqueness of each town really stood out to me and what each one offers. I loved that you visit each town on a different day by ferry and experience something new and exciting.
Things are cheap
I know I mentioned this before, but Lake Atitlán is very cheap. Accommodation was cheap and getting breakfast, lunch and dinner every night was very affordable. Many of the smaller local places had really good deals on food. The street vendors sometimes give you a random tourist prices but you can haggle down to something more reasonable.
Cool things to do in Lake Atitlán

There is a lot to do here in Lake Atitlán if you want a more active trip. You can ask your hotel to arrange some activities for you like kayaking in the lake, swimming, hiking Indian Nose, cooking classes, art and craft lessons where they teach you how to make traditional crafts. You can visit Lake Atitlán National Reserve and see butterflies, monkeys and pretty flowers. Make sure to add these things to your Lake Atitlán itinerary.
Some things I didn’t like about Lake Atitlán
Food quality
I got really sick immediately after coming back from Lake Atitlán. I actually got sick on the plane. One of my friends said some of the food was tasting off and he saw fly eggs too. The very first place we went for dinner was a burger joint that had chicken patties on the menu. But, when we started eating it we realized it was hardly meat and just had a lot of filling and breadcrumbs and it didn’t taste good at all. So, try to investigate a little harder into where you eat than I did.
Not much water sports in the Lake
I thought that with such a huge and beautiful lake smack in the middle of everything, that there would be much more happening in the water. It was actually the opposite. There were many no swimming signs all over the towns. I also read that a lot of the runoff and waste of homes and places in the villages just run right off into the lake. Very unfortunate.
Who Lake Atitlán is for and who Lake Atitlán isn’t for
For backpackers
There were so many backpackers in Lake Atitlán. I think that most of the tourists were backpackers staying in hostels and just roughing out there spending as little as possible to have a great time.
For people who like culture and wellness
If you want to get to know the Mayan people, see how they live, eat what they eat and even learn Spanish, then Lake Atitlán is for you. If you want to stay at a calming eco lodge where everything is peaceful and you can spend your days doing yoga and meditating, then Lake Atitlán is for you.
Not for luxury travelers
Lake Atitlán is not for those of you who want to stay at a luxury all-inclusive resort on the beach. Nobody here is really on that vibe. There are too many locals integrated into everything here and the type of accommodations here are really not built for that at all.
Not for people short on time
Lake Atitlán is a slow-paced type of destination. The best things to do here are actually your experiences and the vibe you feel during the days you have here. If you want fast-paced activities constantly, Lake Atitlán is not for you.
Where I recommend staying in Lake Atitlán Guatemala

For places to stay in Lake Atitlán, you have so many options and most of them are great. Where you decide to stay will really determine your views and comfort level.
My personal favorite place to stay in Lake Atitlán is Hotel y Centro de Convenciones Jardines del Lago. It looks kind of like a resort right on the lake overlooking the water and the volcanoes in the distance. There are restaurants here, a swimming pool and a really top of the line coffee shop and stores to buy stuff.
If you want a more expensive but fancier hotel you can stay at Hotel Atitlán. Hotel Atitlán has a pristine garden that stands out among the other accommodations here. This hotel is located in Panajachel.
Free Cerveza hostel is another special place I would recommend to backpackers and budget travelers who want to visit Lake Atitlán. This is a hostel that offers free beer and has become one of the most popular stays in the lake. Another thing that makes this place unique is that the rooms are outdoor glamping style tents. You are outside on the grass, right in front of the lake and it’s really fun with a group of friends who are here to have fun.
Is Lake Atitlán Better than Antigua?
This really depends on what type of traveler you are and the experiences you want to have. My experience was that Lake Atitlán was better than Antigua for me. Antigua has a lot more things to do and day trips to fun tourist attractions like Hobbitenango.
Lake Atitlán isn’t better than Antigua per se, it’s just different and offers a different look at Guatemala. It’s more down to earth and slow with less large tours happening. There isn’t any historical city action happening either in Lake Atitlán compared to Antigua. So, if you like that sort of thing you might like Antigua more.
I recommend just visiting both places. Lake Atitlán vs Antigua is hard to compare and they should both not be missed if you come to Guatemala.
Final Thoughts
Lake Atitlán is truly a unique and culturally immersive place that I will always remember. Would I come back here anytime soon? I don’t think so. As I am an adventure traveler primarily, there isn’t much to do in Lake Atitlán that will get my blood pumping like some other places I’ve been to. But if a slower type of travel is your thing, then definitely go back.
I really hope this guide helps answer the question, is lake Atitlán Guatemala worth visiting. The answer is yes.
