Hobbitenango Guatemala was one of those places I almost skipped because we didn’t know it even existed until last minute. I was already in Guatemala when I started researching things to do around Antigua, and after hours of scrolling through random attractions, I came across photos of this strange little Hobbit-inspired village sitting high in the mountains.
I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. A Lord of the Rings-style theme park in Guatemala sounded like it could either be a tourist trap or something completely unique. After visiting, I can confidently say it was one of the most fun and unexpected experiences I had during my trip.
The combination of mountain views, cool misty weather, colorful hobbit houses, games, food, and the feeling of walking through a fantasy village made Hobbitenango one of my favorite things to do near Antigua. It was unique and unlike anything I’ve ever did before.

My experience visiting Hobbitenango Guatemala
We visited Hobbitenango as a day trip from Guatemala City. When we were driving nearer to Hobbitenango the road slowly climbing into some amazing mountains with nice views. It got kind of cold and all of a sudden we could see the valleys way down below.
When we finally arrived, the first thing I noticed was the bright green grassy areas and hobbit houses with large circular doors. There were thick wooden vines as railings going through the entire place, setting a really immersive feeling.
Walking through the entrance and little wooden corridors felt interesting to say the least. The tiny round-door cottages, wooden buildings, and fantasy-style decorations made the whole place feel playful and almost surreal.
How to get to Hobbitenango from Antigua

We first had to get from Guatemala City to Antigua. It’s really straight forward.
- Transportation to Antigua: From Guatemala City, your first step is to get to Antigua, which is the nearest city to Hobbitenango. You can take a shuttle, bus, or taxi from Guatemala City to Antigua. Shuttles are often the most convenient option, as they offer direct transportation and can be booked in advance. We just booked an UBER, which took us almost directly to the base of the mountain.
- Climb or Take a Vehicle up the Mountain: From the base of the mountain, you have the option to hike up to Hobbitenango or take a vehicle. If you choose to hike, be prepared for a moderately challenging uphill trek. Alternatively, there are open back trucks with about twelve seats available for hire that can take you up the mountain if you prefer not to hike. This truck is included in your fee when you pay to enter at the entrance.
- If you drive yourself to Antigua: You can park in any of the parking lots in the village for 20 Quetzals or $2.58 USD.
Once you’ve arrived, make your way up the hill and into the main area to pay and receive your bands / day pass. You can also make any hotel reservations now.
Antigua to Hobbitenango shuttle
Hobbitenango has an office in Antigua where a shuttle leaves every day at 8am, 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm Guatemala time. This shuttle then heads back from Hobbitenango to Antigua at 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. You can book a round trip for 45 Quetzals or $6 USD. Make sure to show up for the shuttle 15 minutes before it leaves. I found it really simple and easy to just take an Uber from where you are in Guatemala straight to Antigua parking lots to get the truck to take you up.
How much does it cost to visit Hobbitenango

There is an entrance fee to receive your wrist band that allows full access. The entrance fee is $7 usd or 50 Quetzals. This fee includes Transportation from the bottom of the mountain to Hobbitenango and from here back down when you’re done. It also includes unlimited games like Archery, axe throwing and mini golf, Jumps on the giant swing, access to all the trails.
I was honestly shocked by how cheap this experience is. This place was well maintained and had staff working to bring people the best experience. For $7 USD, getting access to all these games, views and fun times was a real treat. It’s definitely something I’d recommend to everyone.
On the weekend there is also an all you can eat buffet that you pay together with your entrance fee. The buffet costs Q150 for breakfast and Q184 for lunch or $19USD and $23USD. For kids it’s Q69 and Q79 or $9USD and $10USD. This is insanely cheap for all that’s offered here.
Things to do in Hobbitenango
Hobbitenango Hand

It’s not that scary below, there’s a net, don’t worry. This is a famous land mark and attraction that many tourists around the world want to get a picture on.
The Hobbitenango Hand was probably the attraction I was most excited about because it is the photo everyone recognizes. Standing on the giant hand overlooking the mountains feels like the perfect “I was here” moment.
I’ll admit, it looks more intimidating in photos than it actually feels. There is a safety net below, so you don’t need to worry about falling. The hardest part is waiting your turn while everyone tries to get the perfect picture.
I tried my hand at archery and axe throwing, although I quickly realized my orc-fighting skills needed some work. The axe throwing looked much easier than it actually was. After a few embarrassing attempts, I gave up and accepted that I probably wasn’t making it into Middle Earth anytime soon.
There is also a strip or section where on either side has artisan crafts and foods to purchase and eat; such as local chocolates, coffee and sweets. I didn’t really try much of these because they all looked the same and we were running low on cash.

Where to Stay in Hobitenango

There are three hobbit houses you can stay at in the mountains. La Casita del Sueño, La Casita del Nido and Cala Esmeralda. La Casita del Sueño is the best for a couple, and the Casita del Nido can comfortably accommodate 2 couples or a small family. La Cala Esmeralda is the largest house and has a unique terrace with incredible views. There are no refunds or exchanges for reservations canceled less than 1 week in advance.
At this lodge you mainly come here to disconnect and immerse yourself in culture and peace. There is no Wi-Fi here so do not panic. I thought it was really cold up here in the day time, so in the night I would imagine it’s colder. So you don’t need air-conditioning or a fan even.
At Hobbitenango, they specifically ask that you do not bring your own drinks and food. This way when you purchase from the bar and restaurant service you support this amazing establishment. You can order food directly to your room if you like.
If you’re looking for a super unique and uncommon attraction, it is certainly one of your best options and probably in my top 5 best things to do in Guatemala.
Is Hobbitenango Worth Visiting
Looking back, Hobbitenango was one of those places that made my Guatemala trip more memorable. It wasn’t the biggest attraction I visited, and it wasn’t the most famous place in the country, but that is exactly why I enjoyed it. I love hidden gems that don’t get that many people.
Guatemala already has incredible volcanoes, lakes, and ancient ruins, but Hobbitenango offers something completely different. It’s super affordable and anyone can do it with kids or even elderly people.
For me, that is what made it worth visiting.
