One of the first things we had to figure out when planning this trip was how were we going to get from Guatemala City to Semuc Champey. What I realized about Guatemala is that almost everything is very cheap compared to other places I’ve been. It cost us $130 USD to get to Semuc Champey from Guatemala City airport.

We were a group of 4 people with suitcases and everything. We went to Coban first, directly from the airport, then would make the other part of the journey to Semuc Champey from Coban.

This is just one activity and location in Guatemala. I have a full detailed and already planned for you, Guatemala itinerary.

That was my journey, but I want to tell you all the other ways how to get to Semuc Champey, whether you are coming directly from the airport or just from the City, it’s the same thing. There are different modes of transport you can take. Each one will be a different experience, different in cost, safety and comfort. I hope after reading this guide you can decide on what’s best for you.

Journey Overview

Guatemala City to Coban

Semuc Champey is not very close to any proper city. The closest town to it is Coban, this is where I stayed. If you want to know where to stay in Coban read my article. It’s located in the Alta Verapaz region, about 220 kilometers from Guatemala City. The final stretch from Lanquín to Semuc Champey is the most challenging part, as it involves an unpaved mountain road that is only accessible by 4×4 vehicles or local pickup trucks.

Most travelers first make their way to Cobán, a larger town that serves as the main gateway to the region. From Cobán, you continue to Lanquín and then on to Semuc Champey. While it’s possible to reach the pools in one day from Guatemala City, most people prefer to break up the journey with an overnight stop in Cobán or Lanquín. This is what I did and I also recommend you to break up the journey into 2 days. Especially if doing it immediately after arriving.

By Shuttle

The tourist shuttle is the most common way to get from Guatemala City to Semuc Champey. This is a shared van service that can pick you up by your hotel and drop you off in Lanquin, the nearest town to Semuc Champey. This is one of the best ways to make the journey because it’s convenient and you don’t need to take multiple buses.

The shuttles leave early in the morning, often around 6:00 or 7:00 a.m., and arrive in Lanquín by late afternoon or early evening. The total travel time is typically 9 to 10 hours, depending on traffic and weather. The vans are air-conditioned but can feel cramped on the long ride, especially when traveling during peak tourist season.

Obviously this is more expensive than the local bus, but it’s still cheap, safer and more comfortable for tourists. If you are traveling solo or are a woman you should definitely consider taking the shuttle from Guatemala City to Semuc Champey.

By Public Bus

Guatemala City to Semuc Champey

If you really want a local experience or are doing a tight budget backpacking trip, it’s possible to take a series of public buses known as “chicken buses.” These colorful repurposed American school buses connect most towns in Guatemala and are the main form of transportation for locals. They look like fun party busses.

The route typically involves taking a bus from Guatemala City to Cobán, then transferring to another bus from Cobán to Lanquín. Once you reach Lanquín, you can continue to Semuc Champey by local pickup truck or 4×4. The entire trip by public transport usually takes between 10 and 12 hours. The staff at our hotel told us that you need to be outside waiting on the bus from 3 a.m.

The bus ride from Guatemala City to Cobán takes around 5 to 6 hours. Buses leave from the Zona 1 terminal, and it’s best to take an early departure to allow enough time for the connecting buses. From Cobán, the journey to Lanquín takes another 2.5 to 3 hours along a winding mountain road. The last section, from Lanquín to Semuc Champey, adds another 45 minutes to an hour, depending on road conditions.

Public buses are much cheaper than shuttles, but they can be uncomfortable and crowded. If you have lot’s of luggage and sa big group of people it can be difficult. For experienced travelers who are used to Latin American public transport, this route might be something you’re looking for to immerse yourself in everyday Guatemalan life.

Guatemala City to Cobán: The First Leg of the Journey

where to stay in Coban Guatemala

Whether you take a shuttle or bus, Cobán is the main stop on the way to Semuc Champey. It’s the largest town in the Alta Verapaz region and is everyone’s typical overnight base. Many travelers stop in Cobán to break up the long trip and explore the nearby coffee plantations and waterfalls. It’s cold up there so maybe walk with a jacket. For a full guide on things to do in Coban read the article here.

From Guatemala City, the road to Cobán is paved and in good condition. The drive goes over mountains on winding roads and I actually saw real cowboys riding horses on the roads like it was nothing. The town has several hotels and restaurants, so I think its a good place to rest before continuing to Lanquín.

If you plan to visit Semuc Champey on a tight schedule, you can stay one night in Cobán and leave early the next morning for Lanquín. By early I mean 3 am. This helps reduce travel fatigue and allows you to reach the pools with more energy the following day.

Coban to Lanquin

The road from Cobán to Lanquín is one of the most picturesque parts of the journey for me because of the cloud forests and cold weather. It winds through dense forest and mountain ridges that give a glimpse of rural Guatemala. Although the distance is short, the drive is slow due to curves up the mountains. The trip usually takes 2.5 to 3 hours by shuttle or local minibus. I actually took a private taxi directly from the airport.

My guide, everything you need to know about Coban, Guatemala will help you plan better if you decide to stay in Coban for a while.

Minibuses to Lanquín leave regularly from Cobán’s local terminal. You can also arrange private transport or a shared van from your hotel. For groups or families, hiring a private driver can be worthwhile, especially if you want to stop for photos or meals along the way.

Lanquin to Semuc Champey

Once you reach Lanquin, consider yourself there because you are only 10 km away from Semuc Champey. The journey to Semuc Champey can be up to an hour long because the road is unpaved. I have this thought in my head because of experiences: whenever the road gets terrible and it looks like you’re going into nowhere, that means the most beautiful hidden gem or attraction is nearby.

If you are staying in Lanquin instead of Coban, my guide on everything you need to know about Lanquin Guatemala will help you plan your time there really easy.

You need a 4×4 truck or SUV that can handle the path, especially if it’s raining and muddy. You can get stuck if you have a regular car. All these concerns are why it’s smart to research anywhere you need to go first. Most travelers hire a local pickup truck and that’s standard transport between Lanquin and Semuc Champey. These trucks are open-air, and you might be required to stand at the back and hold onto the iron rails.

Guatemala City Airport to Semuc Champey

If you arrive at La Aurora airport you can go directly to Semuc Champey or one of the villages before it if you plan carefully. There will be a barrage of local taxi men offering to carry you wherever you need to go right outside the airport. There are also companies working from within the airport that drop you wherver you need to go.

Most shuttles leave early, so it’s only realistic if your flight lands the night before. You can stay overnight in Guatemala City or Antigua and then take a shuttle to Lanquín the next morning.

There are no direct airport-to-Semuc Champey shuttles, but private drivers and tour operators can arrange the trip. Private transport is the most expensive option but also the most direct. It’s ideal for groups or anyone arriving late at night who prefers to travel without stopping. Private transport from Guatemala City airport to Coban cost me $105 USD.

Private Transfers and Car Rentals

Hiring a private driver is the best way to get to Semuc Champey because you don’t have to worry about any arrangements or bus and shuttle times. You can even stop off at places along the way because the ride is customized to you. It allows you to travel at your own pace, stop for food or photos, and choose your schedule. The drive takes about 8 to 9 hours depending on stops. But I recommend stopping in Coban, sleeping there and using it as a base then go from Coban to Lanquin and Lanquin to Semuc Champey.

For couples or small groups, splitting the cost of a private car can make the price reasonable. The main advantage is comfort and safety, especially for travelers unfamiliar with the area. We were a group of 4 and we split the $105 USD it costs and that was perfect for us.

Driving yourself is also possible, though I absolutely do not recommend this at all. Mainly because I think driving in Guatemala is difficult and it’s hard to understands the rules of the road. The road from Guatemala City to Cobán is straightforward, but the stretch from Cobán to Lanquín and then to Semuc Champey is narrow, steep, and can be rough. You’ll need a 4×4 vehicle to reach the park entrance safely. If you rent a car, make sure it’s suitable for mountain roads. But please don’t do this!

How Safe is it to Get to Semuc Champey

If you go with a tour or use a shuttle service, that is the most safe option. If you have to use the chicken busses and travel along with the locals then that might be less safe. Just keep your belongings safe and in eye sight. But, in reality you shouldn’t have any worries at all.

The main risks are the mountain roads, long hours and weather.
