Lake Atitlán is one of my favorite places to visit in Guatemala. It’s one of the most culturally immersive places I’ve ever experienced. Lake Atitlán is a place you go for the experience and vibe rather than the attractions and things to do.

Everyone I’ve spoken to who visited Lake Atitlán including myself, loved it. But, one question many people have different opinions on is: when is the best time to visit Lake Atitlán, Guatemala?

The best thing about Lake Atitlán is that there are many different unique towns and villages surrounding the lake. Each town has its own vibe and different type of tourist that goes there to seek something specific. If you want easy traveling and logistics you’d go to Panajachel. Those of you who want to party and have that backpacker vibe, then San Pedro is for you. And the best thing about the lake is being able to lookout and see a giant body of water with tall volcanoes behind it. I loved the view, especially drinking coffee and having lunch outside.

Visiting the towns are definitely one of the best things to do in Lake Atitlán for people coming here for the first time.

I visited Lake Atitlán at the beginning of September and noticed quite a few differences compared to other times of the year that other people I know went. The number of tourist crowds, weather and temperature, visibility of the volcanoes and the cost of hotels and flights would all affect your experience.

I’ve written this guide from my own experience, to show people when to visit Lake Atitlán Guatemala at a time that is best for them and the type of things they really want to experience.

The best time to visit Lake Atitlán: short answer

Before we get into details of what month to visit Lake Atitlán and stuff like that, every traveler has a different set of goals when they are traveling to a place. It can be to travel really cheaply on a budget, it can be to relax and avoid crowds and it can be to meet lots of new people.

In Lake Atitlán, if you want to have cheaper flights, hotels, tours and fewer crowds, you should visit between May and October. You should also expect more rain during most of these months. September and October specifically. When I was here at the beginning of September, it hardly rained and the days were sunny and clear most of the time. So, you never really know. I just generally never travel in peak season.

If you want clear skies, low chance of rain with less wind, then the dry season from November to April is good for you. On the other hand, this is when Lake Atitlán is the most crowded, hotels and tours are the most expensive and booked up and flights are usually more expensive.

I recommend aiming to visit Lake Atitlán in November. I think that November is the safest month in terms of weather. The rainy season is just coming to an end and crowds of tourists haven’t yet started to show up here. That means the prices of hotels, food and tours are still relatively cheap. So in short, I’d go in November or late October.

How many days in Lake Atitlán depends on how slow you want your trip to be. I recommend staying 4 or 5 days. A lot of the time, that’s an entire trip for me. And if you only want to spend one day in Lake Atitlán, my article could help you immensely with that adventure.

Dry Season vs Rainy Season

In Lake Atitlán the dry season is from November to April and it’s when most people want to come to Lake Atitlán. The sky is clear, which makes the lake and volcanoes more visible and better for pictures. There is much less wind on the lake as well. This means the lake will be calmer and ferries will be more reliable to take people to the towns around the lake.

I wrote a guide on where to stay in Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. This is for all seasons and has amazing places in each of the main towns.

Lake Atitlan is all about shuttling to the different towns via ferry boat. Because the weather is calmer and nice with less chance of rain, boat transport will be easier. There is something called the Xocomil winds in Lake Atitlán Guatemala, especially in the evenings. When we arrived at Lake Atitlán and came out close to the water from a jetty at our hotel, the winds were so strong and colder at this time. It was really interesting.

If you want to visit Lake Atitlán during the safe and typical time of the dry season here’s what to expect. The mornings will be much less windy than afternoons and it’s a little colder. The afternoons are warm and sunny and you can go exploring the different towns on foot easily.

There is much better visibility of the lake and volcanoes from anywhere around the lake. You’ll have much better views of the San Pedro, Toliman and Atitlán volcano. If you really want the best pictures then the dry season will ensure that happens. In the rainy season, the volcanoes can be hidden by the clouds for hours sometimes.

In the dry season the hiking conditions are usually better too. Because there’s generally less rain, the paths are less muddy and it’s easier to walk. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still hike during the wetter months.

The rainy season in Lake Atitlán runs from May to October and is not bad at all. When I visited here in September, there wasn’t any rain on any of the days. It was windy in the afternoon and especially at night. The sky was grey sometimes and would block out the volcanoes. Other than that, I personally think everything else was better.

In the rainy season in Lake Atitlán, everything is cheaper. Hotels are half empty, tours are cheap and attractions and restaurants are never crowded with tourists. This is also what we call the off season. Where travel is slower, flights are cheaper and everything is quieter. These days, much more people realize this and still travel during the off season, like me.

During the rainy season, it hardly ever rains non stop for days or something like that. Mostly there would be clouds in the sky in the afternoon and that’s it. The weather really wasn’t that bad while I was there.

In a nutshell, the main advantages of visiting Lake Atitlán in the rainy season are lower prices, fewer crowds and a quieter, more local vibe.

What kind of trip do you want?

Lake Atitlan Guatemala

Choose Dry Season if you want:

  • Better first-time experience

Choose Rainy Season if you want:

  • Lower costs
  • Fewer tourists

My Personal Take

I always recommend people to travel at the end of the off season. This is because the “bad” weather has mostly subsided and you begin to see much more sunny days on the lake and clearer skies already. At the same time, not many tourists started coming here as yet. So, everything is still quiet and prices are and still low. Is Lake Atitlán Guatemala worth visiting even in the rainy season? Yes, absolutely.
